Illini West School Community Works Together to Address Rise in Student Behavior Issues

They say think globally and act locally. That's what's happening at Illini West High School in response to significant increases in student behavior issues that are being reported nationally.

What started as a discussion between the Illini West High School Education Association and district administrators has grown into a collaborative effort that includes students, parents, teachers, administrators, and board members.

The Illini West High School Education Association and district administrators issued a joint letter on April 26th that outlined a plan to seek input from all stakeholders and to develop a set of shared priorities that we can use to move forward through what is certainly a challenging time.

Key components of the plan include:

  1. Implementing a Student Advisory Committee: A Student Advisory Committee will be established that will meet monthly with the Superintendent and the Principal to discuss school climate and ways to improve student behavior.

  2. Conducting a Review of the Student Behavior and Discipline Code: The high school principal will form a committee consisting of the following members to review the existing Student Behavior and Discipline Code. The committee will make recommendations for change no later than June 30th:

    1. 2 teachers

    2. 2 students

    3. 2 parents

    4. 2 High School Administrators

    5. 1 Board Members

  3. Collaboration Meetings: The IWHSEA will hold collaboration meetings with teachers on classroom management. Teachers will share with their colleagues what works well for them in terms of managing student behavior.

  4. Agreed-Upon Processes: The high school administration and staff will commit to a full understanding of building-wide expectations for student behavior and collectively agree to implement these expectations through a well-understood referral process. All staff members will commit to a shared responsibility for enforcing school rules and expectations.
